eBike Battery Maintenance

eBike Battery Maintenance Tips

Best Practices

  • Regularly inspect the battery and charger for damage. Never charge a battery which you suspect is damaged or know is broken, and do not use it.
  • Make sure the charging socket and plug are clean and dry before connecting and charging the battery.
  • Only use the supplied charger cord. Ensure the cord plug is fully inserted in the charger before plugging the charger into a power outlet.
  • Only use the charger supplied with the bicycle. Inspect the charger before every use for possible damage to the charger itself, the cable or the charging plug. Never use a charger which you suspect is damaged or know is broken.
  • Place the charger on a stable, level surface unaffected by heat. If the battery is charged outside of the frame, place the battery on the same surface as the charger.
  • You should charge the battery in a dry, well ventilated area and make sure the battery and charger are uncovered during the charging process. Ensure that the battery and charger are not exposed to any flammable or dangerous substances.
  • NEVER leave an eBike outdoors in extreme weather for extended periods of time.
  • ALWAYS keep your battery at least 50% charged during extreme cold conditions.
  • It should never be stored under 14’ F (-10' C)

Step-by-step

  1. Plug the charger plug into an outlet (100 - 240V), using the appropriate plug for the country’s standards.
  2. Locate the charging socket on the non-drive-side of the battery, near the crank.
  3. Turn off the battery and unplug the wiring harness.
  4. Connect the charging plug with the charging socket on the battery.
You should charge the battery in an area with a smoke detector. The four green LEDs next to the charging socket indicate the level of charge in the battery in 25% increments.
  5. When charging is complete, disconnect the charging plug from the battery socket.
  6. Unplug the charger from the wall socket.

As the weather begins to drop and the snow starts to fall, it is increasingly important to know how to properly care for your electric bike and its Lithium-ion battery. It may be possible for some people to ride their bikes during the winter months, while others must pack them away until the warmer weather returns.

Whether you plan to ride in the cold and snow or if you decide to pack your e-bike away, we've got you covered with some commonly asked questions.

Q: Can I ride in the snow?

A: We definitely don't recommend riding in deep snow or on icy roads. If you decide to go out in the snow, make sure you do so in the daytime when the snow is not too deep and there is absolutely NO ice. We always recommend wearing a helmet and protective riding gear anytime you go out on a bicycle, but especially in the snow. Always make sure to have a full charge if you're riding in the cold.

Q: If I decide to ride in cold weather, how will it affect my battery?

A: Most, if not all, electric bikes use Lithium-Ion batteries (abbreviated Li-ion) which is the most common battery found in rechargeable devices. Like your phone, the battery on your electric bike will experience changes in extreme temperatures. Adjust your ride accordingly to the fact that your battery may diminish a little quicker than usual this time of year.

Q: Do I have to bring my battery inside during cold weather?

A: Yes. The Li-ion battery needs to be stored in a cool, dry area that is between 30°F - 100°F. Allow two hours for the battery to warm up to room temperature before charging. Never charge your battery when the surrounding area is below 40°F.

Q: Do I have to bring my entire bike inside along with my battery?

A: As long as you bring your battery inside, the frame of your electric bike can be stored in a basement or shed. If you want to avoid any dust or nicks to the paint, we recommend putting a cover on your bike while it is in storage. Electric bikes should not be left outdoors in the elements; eventually dew and moisture will get into electrical components if they are left outside.

Q: Do I need to charge my battery at all during the months it is not in use?

A: Yes. Your battery should be charged at least once every 40 days when not in use and should be stored at least 50% charged. This is going to maintain the health of your battery so that you will be ready to ride again in the Spring!

Q: What should I do when I'm ready to ride again after the winter?

A: Give your e-bike a "check-up." Make sure the tires are pumped up, charge your battery, tighten anything that might seem loose, patch up any dings/scratches that may have happened in storage, and give your bike a test ride. Make sure everything feels okay and enjoy; you're back to riding again!
